Food for Thought
I’m curious as to how your mind works, so clue me in. Watch this all the way through and then tell me:
1) Were you able to watch the entire video?
2) Did it bother you? Why or why not?
3) Does it change your mind?
4) Does it change your actions?
I’m serious. I’d really like to know.

I made it 2.6 seconds! I can't believe you tricked me into clicking on this! You know you can't change my mind on anything. I can't wait for the LITTLE LADY to put the big bird on the table. Maybe you should run a click on the NFL highlights!
1) yes, but i was absolutely horrified and nauseated. kind of like when i see "w" on tv.
2) see above.
3) ignorance is bliss.
4) yes, but i would like to see a video on the treatment of tofurkey's before i eat any.
I think this video was ridiculous. There is a "holier than thou" air about it and I do not think animals are entitled to rights, due process, representation and/or special preference like human beings.
To quote Kate the Great, "I'm pro choice across the board," so if somebody wants to eat meat, have at it.
All this from a guy who has been a vegetarian for 9 months now....
I think PETA takes things too far - comparing the slaughter of chickens to the slaughter of humans for example - which is why I'm not a member. But why would people support torture of animals (one issue) or eat food that's pumped full of hormones or filled with tumors (another issue). That sh*t can't be good for you.
Is it that old American/male stubborness: "You can't tell me what to eat"? Or do people reject the logic because they don't like how the message sounds? How much sense does that make?
Believe me, I don't think animals are the same as people. We were created in God's image. But I don't think it's very humane to treat them with cruelty. If you agree, then why support it by continuing to eat food from factory farms and other such vendors?
I was able to watch the entire video, but it did bother me. I treat my dog like a member of my family. It is how we were raised. Animals also deserve respect. They feel pain and have emotion. I know this because my dog is always happy when we get home and cries when we leave. Although I feel strongly about the abuse against animals I am sorry to say that it does not change my mind. I am still going to eat Turkey on Thanksgiving. I guess you would qualify me as hypocritical in that area. One of the things that I admire about you the most is that you not only preach your convictions, but you live by them.
Just so you know I watched the whole thing...
TOFURKEY? are effin kidding me!? TOFURKEY? c'mon kate.
The only thing I need to know about turkeys is the price per pound and how long will it take to thaw 15lbs of frozen Butterball.
The practices developed at "big farms" and factory style slaughter houses have brought affordable protein to increasing numbers of people in all economic classes around the world. Free range is expensive, inefficient and unproductive. You can choose to be vegetarian because you have the choice. Most people just want to eat.
And tell me this, why is it ok for Peta to kill dogs and cats for profit but not ok for Butterball or Swanson to kill turkeys and chickens for profit?
I eat turkeys and chickens so I figure there is at least some value in it. I can't remember the last time I had a dog or cat. How about you?
How does PETA kill dogs and cats?
I watched it all the way through. Oy. I'm don't know which is worse, that I watched it or that I eat turkey. I think I'll have an extra helping of salad instead this Thanksgiving.
This is not news kate. It has been out for some time.
But, here are some links to PETAkillsaanimals.com, what you would classify as a right wing site, but I say is more like investigative journalism -
http://www.petakillsanimals.com/petaKillsAnimals.cfm
And this is a pdf of a PETA report that some of the information comes from -
http://www.petakillsanimals.com/downloads/PetaKillsAnimals.pdf
a story from Hampton Roads, VA
http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories/story.cfm?story=92098&ran=179991
and plenty of other similar stories
http://www.petakillsanimals.com/news.cfm
I clicked on the link, but saw the title and clicked out if it before it began. I have seriously thought about becoming a vegetarian. I love animals more than humans. Animals don't do mean hateful things...people do.
I ate an Italian sub for lunch, now I feel guilty......
BTW...to Mr. C. Hampton Roads Va?
Please...I know the area....can we say Hicks?
petakillsanimals.com
my bad on the misspleling ;-)
get it? I misspelled misspelling? haha
Not a racist comment at all. I have been visiting that area most of my life. I wasn't even thinking of race. I just know the area well...but since you mentioned race......when I visit with my Hispanic husband..and my mixed race son.....I get stares...lots of them....from WHITE people.
Disgust for my fellow human?...yes, some of them disgust me.
As for poor people...there was a time when my husband and I didn't have two nickles to rub together...but we worked hard, educated ourselves, and earned everything we have.
So, no apology then?
nope
what if I told you I was a turkey? Would you apologize then? gobble gobble.
or TOFURKEY?
Why is it ok for you to insuate white people are racist because you have a hispanic husband and a mixed race son? I have hispanic friends with white wives and mixed race children, but i'm not racist. You don't get to claim the high ground because you say you do, you have to actually be on high ground first.
Tell me about the HICKS name calling. Where did that come from? Why did you feel the need to resort to name calling simply because the people you support were murdering dogs and cats and putting them in dumpsters in a small town instead of a big town. Now your caught in a pickle. There were other stories, but I don't think you checked them out.
1) Yes.
2) Yes. Why not.
3) No.
4) Policy: I only deep-fry free range turkeys that have died of natural causes in the comfort of their own home while surrounded by loved ones and scented votives. You must believe me when I tell you that these are very easy to find on the West Coast, Katie.
Mr. C: That "gobble, gobble" stuff is high quality. I'm still laughing.
Oh, and a shout out to Beth who would never be hypocritical in my book. It's not like you're preaching about treating animals well and then putting them in a dumpster.
Eat your turkeys, turkeys. I still love you!
Signed,
Morally Superior but Fun to Be Around
1. I didn't want to watch the whole thing, but I did so I could answer questions 2-4.
2. It bothers me that you posted this before Thanksgiving. Couldn't you have waited 2 weeks?
3. I'm thinking I shouldn't buy a Turducken.
4. If Jim Davis stops eating turkeys, so will I!
In case anyone is keeping score:
1. Tam- no disrepect intended b/c I'm sure you're a bang up person, but:
2. MR. C you are the bomb! I want to party with you, man! I was laughing so hard at your comments that I sharted like six times and chortled twice. When can we sit down over some beers and watch Fox News?
This is my last post on this subject.
Regarding your Hispanic friends....you are not racist, no...because if you were, they wouldn't be your friends....
I never said I was on "the high ground". My mother grew up in Middlesex County, Va. My cousins live in trailors. My mother was southern...and yes...a hick... a very poor hick....My husband and son get stares from the majority of the white people in that area.
My intention was not to offend anyone with the Hick comment. It was said in Jest. And out of respect for Catherine and her blog, I am done on the subject of hicks.
But I might add, I do apologize to all the turkeys out there, because next Thursday, I will be eating one of their relatives. Sorry guys.
Oh and Happy Thanksgiving Mr. C. :)
That was sincere by the way.
PS...where did I ever say I supported PETA?
Happy Thanksgiving you bunch of HICKS!
;-) It's all good. Very entertaining afternoon.
Tam - you didn't, but you jumped on it anyway. BTW, I never got why you felt guilty about getting an italian sub?
Katies bitter half - whenever I make it to Tampa again... but don't wait up. Maybe when I am in town for whichever GOP primary winner is campaigning to kick Jim Davis' ass.
Now everybody go read PEER Review so my visits will go up.
Kate, when was the last post you had over 20 comments?
1) Yes. Well, sort of. I was a little distracted by the piece of sirloin I have stuck in my tooth.
2) No. PETA turns me off with their elitist type attitude and I tend to ignore their message because of it.
3) No. Who's to say that the turkeys do not realize they're destined to be Thanksgiving dinner and that they accept this destiny. Hell, maybe they even look forward to it. Maybe they believe there are 72 virgins and eternal happiness waiting for them in Paradise.
4) Yeah, instead of eating a nice turkey dinner with the fam, I'll be at Hooters treating women like pieces of meat and eating chicken wings.
I was going to post this earlier, but didn't. Now it has lost its punch, but what the hell. Katie's on a record for comments.
OK - I am from Hampton, Va. and take offense to being called a hick. Actually my whole family is from that area. My grandfather was an engineer for NASA. We are not hicks. Hicks are ignornant people who generalize and call groups of people names when they really don't know what they are talking about. Sound familiar?
Disturbing video, had to avert my eyes. This is so great: it's good to be informed, but I have heard also that PETA regurgitates old video files and updates them to make them seem recent, for shock. Not a totally dumb idea, because it works, but that's what I've heard. NOT a fan of PETA, don't EVER plan to be, I agree with Kate on all she said above about them. BUT, things like this don't bother me as much as they used to, they only serve to strengthen my resolve, so I guess it's not a total waste. People need to indeed make their own decisions about what to eat. I don't know that anything is good for you 100%, what with pesticides, hormones, etc...even for vegetarians, there's danger out there. Anyway, Kate, way to go, you got people talking as usual. I love you and am very proud. xo
for the love of christ everybody shut up and get back to work, bunch of hippies.
I can feel the love.
Can anybody say 30 comments?
Is that right? i mean, ethically speaking? Should I be blatantly prostituting Kate's blog for comments?
Since I started the comments I will end them GOODNIGHT!
To "Member of Kates Fan Club":
I said I was joking. :) Don't get your panties in a knot. :) (another joke)
My own Mother and her family are from that area. (seriously)
There are plenty of educated people in Va. who are not hicks. It just seems like when I am there visiting...I never seem to run into any of them...probably because i am with my family (joking again)
Happy Thanksgiving (seriously)
Wow. The responses make for interesting reading.
As for the questions:
1. Yes. It reminded me of watching chickens being processed. I was suprised that they allowed that one turkey to go to waste.
2. I wasn't bothered as I have been exposed to poultry processing before.
3.Change my mind about what? Eating turkey in favor of Tofurkey? Not really. I don't like tofu.
4. I'll pony up to the table on Thanksgiving.
With respect to PETA, they are skilled at producing propaganda movies. The film made me think of the anti-abortion propaganda literature I have come across over the years.
Catherine, I could easily be a vegetarian (sans the tofu), as I don't eat meat on a daily basis. I of course could never be a vegan as I love cheese.
Animals suffer, feel pain, and I hope you all get Bird Flu on Thursday.
