"There are no victims in this classroom!"

I will walk in the door today at work and look at angry young faces.

I will tell my new students to put away their cell phones and CD players and iPods. They will ask to watch Jack or some other movie because that's what substitute teachers have allowed. I will tell them no.

They will not be happy. They will curse and I’ll say that the N word is unacceptable even when said to friends. They will laugh at the silly, frizzy-haired white woman with the big forehead and ask if I’ve gone crazy. They might even growl. But I will stand my ground and pretend Coolio is whispering in my ear.

I will walk into a classroom today and look at angry young faces.

Tell me again why Oprah and Bon-Bons are bad?

We have such a thankless job that it is sometimes hard to see why we are in this profession. Our pay sucks, for lack or a better word, and we are often blamed for problems which stem from the home or society in general. We are then asked to fix these problems, but often get into trouble when we really try to do something about them. BUT . . . it is the one child or family that you reach that makes it all worthwhile. If I can have one parent or child tell me that I have made a difference in their lives then all the other CRAP seems insignificant. If you can make a change for the better for just one child you have made the future for all of us a little better. There is so much baggage these kids carry around, especially in disadvantaged schools that having a teacher with expectations and one who truly wants to teach is a gift. It may seem on a day to day basis that we are not appreciated and that our efforts are useless, but you will have that one student or parent come up to you and thank you for what you have done for them. That’s why Oprah and bon bons will have to wait for another day.

Oprah: because watching someone on a TV set ( surrounded by fans, fake people –celebrities & tons of $$$ ) attempt to inspire you is like watching LOTR every day. Both offer fantasy lives.

And Bon-Bons?? Eeeek!
