Do You Believe in Miracles?

Sanity is rare these days, therefore this deserves a mention and relieved smile. Common sense triumphed so bask in it for a moment, enjoy and breathe a sigh of relief.

As you were.

Common sense has nothing to do with this Kate. It's just another example of Republicans trying to cut taxes and dems holding on to them for dear life. It is completely stupid to say, as some on the left have, that it would only affect the rich. Our family is facing issues with this now and not one of us could be classified as rich.

PLEASE explain to me why dems love taxes!

I've never said it only affects the rich. However, it is a reasonable tax and source of revenue that's needed right now.

It's unfair to saddle our children with the kind of debt we're incurring and you know that. We don't love taxes, and you know that too.

There are, however, many programs that benefit our society and need revenue from taxes to run properly. Again - call it an investment in our community, our world, whatever you like. I think many programs are worth it.

Please, permanent repeal would not be a tax cut, it would be a tax shift. If you're in favor of a regressive tax structure that burdens lower income people more than higher come out and say so. I don't think anyone, from any political persuasion, is opposed to supporting changes to our tax policy that would protect small family businesses and farms so that heirs could continue operation instead of being forced to sell. Those changes should be made soonest. However, there is nothing wrong with our nation saying, through tax policy, that we favor earned income over inherited wealth. The trouble is most people think they have more potential to be subject to a big estate tax bill than they actually do, so they vote against their own economic interests.

libs love to take peoples money. dont punish a family cause they made some sound investments or benefited from a healthy real estate market.
some tired hippy thinking right there. the money was taxed already. if its kept in the family it shouldn't be taxed again. but you guys haven't met a tax you didn't like.

What? It is in my best economic interest if the government doesn't get close to HALF of what our family would get without the estate tax (and capital gains tax and gift tax and generation skipping tax). I am an Accountant, I know EXACTLY how much our estate tax bill is. I'm shaking my head trying to comprehend your response.

Mr. H-I said "most people" not Mr. H's family. Let's take the IRS's own statistics for 2001, when the Economic Growth and Tax Reconciliation Act was passed. For tax year 2001, only 106,885 estate tax returns were filed (though this may include people who died earlier, and not include some who died in '01) Of those, fewer than half were taxable (51,584) and 159 estates valued at 20 million dollars, or more, paid no estate tax at all. For tax year 2004 only 62,719 returns were filed and again fewer than half paid any federal estate tax (30,276).

Like you, I expect to join the small number of people who not only have to file but also have to pay estate tax. However, just because it may affect both Mr. H and PT doesn't mean repeal is in the best economic interest of either most people, or the country as a whole.

If you'd like to join the folks who filed but paid nothing, perhaps your family could use a better accountant.

You probably lost him at "Mr. H" - Brother needs to lay off the breast milk and "Raffi for Babies" music. The amount of propaganda and relabeling the right has done amazes me. Otherwise intelligent people are willing to vote against their own self-interest just because they fail to fully grasp the issue.

Keep on keepin' on, PT. I leave with a happy heart knowing at least you're here for a bit anyway - injecting common sense where others fear to tread.
