Don't Remember Asking What You Thought

Last week I received an email from Co-worker Acquaintance, expressing concern over the picture on my blog. Homeboy thought I might get into trouble because OH MY GOD my leg is showing. And a bit of bra.

I thanked him for his concern. Seriously. Love the love.

He wrote back: "I hope you're not angry. That was the hardest email I've had to write. Since you write about politics and have criticized the superintendent in the pages of The Tampa Tribune, you need to be careful."

"I appreciate your concern," I said, "and I'll seriously think about it."

Next day, I related the story to Co-Worker Close Friend.

"I've been meaning to tell you something," she said. "The other day, a teacher approached me and said that *several* teachers here at Superior High School are upset about your picture. They think it reflects badly on Superior High in general and wanted to give me a heads up in case the complaint goes down the pike."

I sat there, stunned.

"Goes down the pike?" I said. "That sounds like a threat."

"I know," she said.

"Are these concerned teachers going to report me?"

"Look," Co-Worker Close Friend said, "I think they need to mind their own business. However, I told you weeks ago that picture of you in a silk robe could lead to trouble."

"It's cotton," I said. "I don't wear silk."

"Anyway," she continued, "I'll support you no matter what. I just thought you should know what's being said."

I don't mind if someone expresses concern. Co-Worker Close Friend and Co-Worker Acquaintance are excellent examples. Several loved ones wish I'd either hide behind a book or not post a picture at all due to massive amounts of hate mail I receive. Crazies and all.

I listen. Contemplate. In the end, though, I post my smiling mug to show I stand behind what I believe. Lends just a tad of credibility. Wouldn't be as effective if I posted anonymously. Plus, how could I tell my students and, more importantly, my own children to get up, stand up, if I hid behind an alias? It's important to practice what I preach. And let the chips fall where they may.

I have never advocated anything immoral or illegal. I could take a camera to school and photograph several teachers who wear less than I do without a single repercussion.

And to hell with anyone who thinks my picture reflects badly on Superior High. There are several pictures on the Hillsborough County Sheriff's website that show mug shots of current teachers who have been arrested for drunk driving, drug possession, and domestic battery. Last time I checked, a little leg never hurt anyone.

Besides, what I write and do reflects on me alone. No one else. And I happen to think it reflects nicely.

I'll change my picture when I'm damn good and ready. Not a moment before. Put that in your pipe.

And suck it.

Oh, snap...

I know they did not tell you to take your picture down.

C, I don't even know you and I think you ought to keep your picture up there. Quick question: is one of they things they're teaching at that "school," maybe in a Civics class, um, what is it, again? What's it called? Umm, oh, yeah! Freedom of freakin' expression?

Note to self: when you have kids, ensure that they DO NOT attend this school which, with the exception of the Blogger Catherine, is apparently run by hate-think neo-con 1950s-throwback whackadoos.

Jeez.

Maybe a good compromise would be to replace the fireplace photo with the one with your Pog Mo Thon shirt.

I know you know that I think you are beautiful (when I saw your pic I immediately began requisitioning one of ME ME ME hahaha) but I bet I can guess who sent you that email.

Sometimes these helpful things sound almost like threats, eh?

When the time comes that they can tell a teacher how to dress in what I assume is your own home, let's hope that the revolution is close behind.

I wrote on another blog over a YEAR ago that you could pick out the worst high-school teachers in Tampa by the sleezy way they dress for work.

A sexy woman is never sleezy.

You can edit this if it's out of line, of course.

I just say it.

Just say it and don't even think of taking that cool pic down. I'm so jealous of it. I actually believe jealousy is a wasted emotion but .. you know.

ybor city stogie says you are the bay area's hottest blogger. I quite agree and I totally like men the best and exclusively 'in that way' (hehe)

Don't change a THANG!

I think there is something in the "rule book" about having your pic taken with wine and ice cream...

Yeah, and my political views were going to keep my husband from having a successful military career. Great pic Kate-to me it says, "making the best of my long distance marriage, temporary single parenthood, insane job, insaner state that I live in, and still able to smile with the help of a little wine and ice cream." You aren't trying to seduce school boys by turning them on to politics are you?

I also really enjoy that photo personally. Was Florida the state where they fired the "butt print" artist/teacher? I can't recall exactly, but if that's the case, maybe you should be worried about the knotheads running the system there and what they will think of your photo?

A Virginia school system fired the butt print artist. He's hired the ACLU to take on the constitutional issues.

anonymous bloggers are just as pathetic as anonymous posters.

I'm not sure the butt print artist and I are in the same category. But I'd like to see a school board FOR ONCE say to uptight parents and/or fellow teachers, "Relax." Is he/she an effective teacher? If yes, then is he/she advocating anything immoral or illegal? If no, then butt out.

Seriously.

For the meager (and I use that word loosely - very loosely) salaries we are paid, there sure are a lot of expectations and demands put on us. I really think that the "higher ups" should stop worrying about what we are doing in our own time (which is not immoral or illegal) and instead bow down, kiss our feet every morning we walk through the glorious school threshold and thank us for coming back!

I love the "mug shot" reference. Are any of them commenting on the 'skin' shown on tv during the super bowl? Or a damn baseball game when some leering camera man focuses a little too long on some silicone-enhanced 'hottie' in the stands? Go to many Tampa restaurants & you'll likely find women going out for dinner with less on than you in this picture!

I eat anonymous bloggers.

Moonbeam, I CANNOT believe they are comparing you to the "butt print" person!!!" That must leave a mark...and I am not gonna lie to you, made me laugh hard. In all honesty, f$%^ the establishment for trying to find fault with your freedom of expression, and f^&* those who do not find fault with the "butt print" person's way of doing things.

yours always...

sunshine!

It is UNREAL that you all are talking about "freedom of expression". Do whatever the heck you want in your own home, but putting it on a blog is MAKING IT PUBLIC. Tell me that it's not wrong for students to see their "teacher" in a revealing photo, drinking wine and showing boobs. I am no conservative backwards thinker. This is one left wing Democrat who thinks that ethics is completely lost on this moronic woman.

Just saw a special ed teacher arrested at Chamberlain HS. Hmm...wonder if she's friends with bathrobe girl. They BOTH have two last names, and both even practice in the same FIELD! (Maybe BOTH in "left field.") I think bathrobe girl should just stick to "Mrs. Robinson." That is an absolutely perfect name for you...I can't wait for the STUDENTS at her high school, whereever that is, start POSTING her robe picture. Why not? It is freedom of expression right?

I don't see this as being revealing, so I am at a loss here. I would be perfectly fine with my child (if I had one) accidentally running across it. It's important, regardless of your job, to be able to have freedom of speech/expression. The only time it SHOULD affect your work is if you are promoting or doing something illegal. But then again, there are a large number of parents in this country who are so mentally disturbed that they don't even want their children to be exposed to other cultures/viewpoints, dating, or even have sex education.

Just my 2 cents
