I Hate That Donohue Won

While I respect McEwan and Marcotte's decision to resign from the John Edwards campaign, I hate how it encourages more such attacks in the future.

Looking back, the detail that astonishes me the most is the sheer amount of ink,
air time, and energy devoted to keeping this phony scandal going until McEwan
and I felt we had to resign. One question that's hard to avoid is how much of
the venom had to do with the fact that McEwan and I were young women entering
into a field (Internet communications) that's viewed as almost monolithically
masculine. From my vantage point, it appeared that sexism was one of the primary
motivating energies behind the campaign. Even before Donohue stepped in, various
right-wing bloggers were obsessed with my gender and sexuality. As I noted
at the time of my resignation, the majority of the hate mail I was receiving was
from men, and almost all the e-mails made note of my gender or suggested that I
would be a more pleasant woman if I wasn't so "angry." Bluntly put, I find it
hard to believe that many men would end up being denounced on TV for using words like "f*ck" or "c*nt" on their blog and expect to receive piles of e-mail
offering an opportunity to suck the sender's d*ck.

And the story goes on...

Darn it, I hate the fact that the other side is always right. That means wrong is what is left—damn it!

These women were not forced to resign due to gender. That's a tired argument that holds women back.

I think McEawn got caught up in the flack. No one noticed her until Marcotte joined the staff. As much as Marcotte wants to blame the situation on Donahue, it was the Duke piece that got her. It certainly showed how vindictive and careless she is. ten months later with the discovery in, this woman decides to write a nasty lying and fraudlent artice. Donahue got her for the cussin and antichrist statements.

They never said they resigned due to gender. They said they were targeted and harassed due to gender and the fact that they are outspoken feminists.

No we don't burn them at the stake anymore. We just try to get them fired.

Who's holding who back?

Whatever way you choose to interpret this statement, that's your choice. Women-especially young women-should be way beyond this sort of statement. If one can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. Now, if she had blogged anonymously via their personal blogs, these women would most likely still be working for the Edwards campaign. They were very effective, unfortunately at losing their job due to blogging true...as this blog has maintained true identity bloggers must identify themselves to effectively voice the "courage of their convictions". Careless comments caught up with her and now, she has lost probably the job of her lifetime. Marcotte "Jane Fonda-ed" herself. What a shame-what an impact they might have had.

If we get email and snail mail that contain misogynist messages, why should reporting it be "beyond us"? Why pretend it doesn't exist? We should note that it's out there. Still.

And I wouldn't underestimate the impact they are both having in the midst of all this nonsense. They shouldn't have to hide behind a mask. No one should.

The dream job might still be waiting for our girls. One that doesn't entail cowering, giving in or giving up. These two women are heroes to an awful lot of people. Perhaps they've only just begun.

In the grand scheme of things, Kate...it just does not matter.

Be still my heart. Xanthippas, you are refreshingly acerbic, and do I detect a hint of sarcasm. I am sure it is too good to be true. (“Though I suspect he is a man, I can only hope he is a she. That she is attractive to me and me to her, and that her hair is long, flowing and dark blond or auburn, and her eyes are deep and green or blue, and if she is 5’7” to 5’9” that wouldn’t hurt either.” “Idiot, look what you are doing.”) Uh, sorry, maybe I shouldn’t have typed that out loud.

I hope my eyes do not deceive me though, whatever the gender. I see a stinging wit with great powers of observation. It is possible I detect rationality too? Can this be, or, is it too good to be true? Probably too good…
