Vegetarian Blues
Saw my hot hematologist today so he could clear me for surgery.
No such luck.
Seems my platelet count is about the same as always, on the low side, so he's gotta call Dr. Berger (or "Lew" because he and my hematologist are BFFs) to see if a few days of steroids are in order.
I really hate that my platelet count is so low. On an intellectual level, I know that my eat right-exercise-do no harm philosophy doesn't guarantee good health. But g*ddamn. It should.
Then my brother sends me this:
Risks and benefits of vegetarian diets
Vegetarian diets have been credited with decreasing the incidence of severity of diseases such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diverticular, osteoporosis and cancer of the breast, colon, prostateand lung.
In general, both morbidity and mortality rates for coronary artery disease are lower among vegetarians than non-vegetarians, possibly because of better bloodlipid profiles.
The vegetarian diet may lead to a decrease in plasma cholesterol and an increase in the ratio of high-density lipoprotein to low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Vegetarian diets contain a higher ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids to saturated fatty acids, which may reduce platelet aggregation and blood clotting, possibly by altering the fatty acid composition of blood platelets.
My meatloaf-eating parents are thrilled right now.
What's the solution? I'm not giving up my cruelty-free diet. Perhaps there is some herbal tea that'll clear this up. I don't want to take steroids.
Although, if I do, and steroids make me want to kick some ass... maybe we can stage a boxing match between me and Michael Hussey with the proceeds benefitting me. Shopping spree. Victoria's Secret?
I think I can take him. With or without the juice.

One of my bosses is a vegetarian for the same reason you are, but she has been aware of the deficiencies associated with that diet. She takes some herbal pills to make up some of her deficiencies. I could ask her what she takes, and for what benefit, if you like...
I am surrounded on all sides by people who think I ought to at least eat fish and chicken to boost platelet counts. Help!
I would second that, especially the fish. It is VERY good for you.
But, i dont think you have to. My wife's dad lives in L.A., and is a nutritionist, and sells all kinds of natural medications to help with people's deficiencies. I dont eat vegetables, but i take a multi-vitamin from him that includes many minerals and nutrients that come from vegetables. I also add fish oil b/c i eat fish a lot less than i would like to. And i also add calcium magnesium at night to help reduce headaches and sleep better.
Im sure there are things to substitute for meat, actually i know there are.
Kate, maybe you can raise your own fish and chickens. Although I'm guessing that doesn't guarantee they would be cruelty free... jk!
My vegetarian boss takes a B-complex from Publix. It includes all the typ nutrients from meat, plus a few more. Plus Fish Oil (DHA-250). Between those 2, if you decided to go the pill route, should help your levels.
I'll give it a shot.
Better not be trying to kill me. That'd suck.
i dont follow the murder method, i follow the conversion method. ;)
I take a multi that has tons of the B-vitamins as well, over 1000% recommended daily amt, and i take the fish oil (fish oil concentrate, omega-3, DHA, EPA)as well for memory.
So if you die from it, then i will be dying much sooner.
what do you mean at least eat chicken and fish...aren't they animals too????
That's what I'm saying!!
Although it might help, supplements do not replace what your body needs from meat.
If B-12 will help, there is this natural energy drink that I use smoetimes that may help. Its called zip-something or other. Has 47000% the DRA of B-12. Really. I thought I read the label wrong at first, but thats what it has. Plus something like 2500% the DRA of C. Hasn't killed me yet.
