Response From The Principal -

For those of you keeping score at home.

The back to school skate night is a PTA sponsored and organized activity. I did go over the schedule with her when the dates were considered. I regret that I failed to consider the conflict with these important religious holidays. The dates available for scheduling the skating rink are limited for skate night schools all over the district 11 and the larger community compete for available dates. I suspect that it is too late to cancel and reschedule but I promise to exercise greater sensitivity when we plan this after school activities. Also, the PTA plans on scheduling more skate nights throughout the school year.

Kate... say something. Come on, say something...

Though I'd tell the guy that back to school events don't have to be skate nights, I also actually buy the PTA scheduling of the event. What does that say in the end?

The Robinson's should join the PTA ;) Now THAT could get messy...

Joined the PTA about a month ago. Probably the only Chosen One.

He forwarded a copy to the PTA president. So at least they're all aware now.

PTA nonsense...what have I become?

Good for you for speaking up. I back him/her up for the reason, (having planned and organized events at my schools in the past), because lots of schools are competing for a few nights that the skating rinks/other venues offer. Some places lose money because they might reserve the location for JUST that school, by closing it off to the general public. So that limits the nights they offer out. Anyway, given that, it's good he's aware and maybe he will try his best, or her best, in the future to at least SEE if there are other nights available. Nice going.

I'm just wondering why the principal is using poor grammar in a letter to a parent. She wrote:

This after school activities?????

If I was the principal I would have told you to go pound sand.

Kate, for the record, I commend you on giving the angry anonymous fruit loops a chance to comment on your blog. I couldn't do it. It's one thing to disagree, but another all together to be hostile. Guess they have NO other outlet. So sad for them.

Sounds like a reasonable response. Make sure you let us know about Skate Night in 2008!

If the local Jewish community is really small (which I'm assuming based on your other posts), then I understand how easily Jewish (and other non-Christian) religious holidays could be overlooked when planning events. I'm not making excuses, merely commenting based on my experience growing up in a small Southern town (one synagogue (sp?), one Catholic church, one Lutheran church...). I understand what a "culture shock" it is to learn that not everyone follows the same traditions.

Hopefully you've opened their eyes and things will be different. If not, I know you'll let us know about it. :)

p.s. Come back to Tampa already.
