Democratic Dinner or Race Riot - You Decide

This was a social gathering I could get behind.

Latinos yelling at African-Americans yelling about who's really repressed.

White guys yelling that "this meeting has a (g*ddamn) moderator" and to "sit (your ass) down". To no one in particular.

Bob Null (andvoid) - Candidate for District 11 School Board - yelling at everyone that he's a registered Republican and to back off. Cause he's not so bad.

Allison Hunter, president and (g*ddamn) moderator, yelling that passionate debate is good - but could we please calm down before someone calls the cops on our asses.

I'm paraphrasing.

And then there's me. Yelling at my children to chew with their mouths closed. At least fifteen times.

Let's back up.

The El Paso Dems had their $10 all-you-can-eat pizza/pasta buffet last night. As I walked in, I noticed an extra-large crowd. More than a few of Hispanic descent and I couldn't help but wonder if the guest speaker on immigration was the reason for their sudden interest.

But who am I to judge? I show up for the pasta. And the hopes that someone will give *me* a free glass of wine.

We introduced ourselves and right away I recognized two of the four candidates I endorsed for District 11. As well as two candidates I called "a bit backwards."

Awkward.

But none of them read my sh*t. I'm safe for at least a year before I become overrated. And a superstar. So I ate my pizza in peace.

Homeboy from Immigration Enforcement Unit stood up and started talking about human trafficking and the sex trade. Nothing says family time like discussing underage prostitutes, but my seven year-olds were preoccupied with inhaling plates of complex carbohydrates. They didn't hear me whisper, "Breathe!", much less Officer Todd's energetic tutorials on blood in strange places.

Then the Latinos (who only had accents when they said the word Latinos) went all apesh*t on Todd.

My favorite was the guy in a purple dress shirt, reeking of Old Spice and a thinly-veiled superiority complex, calling:

Todd - a liar.
Immigration enforcement - institutionalized racism and pissing in the wind.
Those who disagree - idiots.

I try not to pay attention to elderly men who still wear mousse. Plus the garlic bread was out of this world.

An audience member who wasn't drinking Crazy Juice asked Officer Todd what we could do to help. He told us to view with suspicion any group of young girls, who should be in school, but were instead traveling with older men. Often they are kept in suburban homes with lots of male visitors.

Some bimbo in the back shouted, "Don't you really mean we should look out for cars full of Mexicans?"

Right.

The Mexicans had Mexicans on the brain. They wouldn't shut up about themselves.

Finally, the air thick with nastiness and too many "my people were wronged worser than your people" nonsense, I turned my baby blues to Officer Todd and raised my hand.

"As a lifelong Democratic activist," I said, "I am constantly dismayed at events where my fellow Democrats are hostile to soldiers and police officers and officials of authority. As a teacher, I too am told that we're part of the problem, we're not doing what we should, and that we're never going to make a difference. And I'm sick of it.

As an officer of the law, you work under tremendous pressure, in a thankless job, with levels of danger that I can't even comprehend. And so I think it's important that you hear a liberal Democrat say: Thank you."

Two people clapped. I was high for five minutes.

Almost turned to the Latinos and said, "Put that in your mojitos and slurp 'em down, b*tches. Next time - show some g*ddamn respect."

But I'm trying to make friends. And score some free wine.

That Allison. She throws a hell of a party.

Dear Drama Queen, Do you have a screw loose? Not all the people you said yelled actually yelled. G'D was only said once. And I saw you sitting so nice and pretty acting like you were some kind of quiet girl. I think you represent yourself and what actually happened inaccurately, AKA You are a liar.

I stand behind my slightly sarcastic yet hysterically funny recollections.

Including, but not limited to, that great garlic bread. Melted in my mouth.

Pinky swear.

So suck it.

Man, I hate unedumacated micki fickis.

Sorry I missed it. Love the commentary though. Pretty sure I know who purple shirt guy is - what's the Spanish word for 'windbag'? I feel bad for Officer Todd - shooting the messenger gets so much accomplished. The Repubs have done a great job on the immigration issue - find a good wedge issue that splits your opposition. Way to fall into the trap guys. Remember, extremists on either side of an issue are usually divisive pains in the ass.

I'm lost in the insensitivity by all to what took place at the meeting. People doin' their jobs, other people lookin'out for their rights (which in case you haven't noticed we're losing at a rapid rate,)people just there scarfin' food, and people using profanity for no other reason than to use profanity....like that used in this posted article!!! Get a grip! Don't bring kids to an adult meeting if you don't want them to hear adult subject matter!! Get a baby sitter.

At 10/20/2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hmmmmmmm, I was there and feel that this assessement of the meeting is absurd and offensive. This was a meeting for adults..if you don't want your kids to hear adult talk, then get a babysitter!!! I see no value in your street language and your slurs....as a self professed liberal and activist, I would ask on what planet you practice your liberalism and activism? Get a life and join the human race!

Kate, sounds like you're making new friends in Colorado.

Speaking of divisive pains in the ass...

All-welcoming, family-friendly, good humored b*tches like you all *must* be what keeps the Democratic Party on top round these parts, huh?

Keep isolating free-thinking liberal activists like me and see how far you get.

Last I checked, you can't afford to isolate ANYONE. Not even someone who likes to use the F word. A lot.

I'm pro-choice/gay rights, against NAFTA and the war in Iraq, biking my environmentally friendly ass to work every day, a recycling vegetarian, Jewish/Buddhist, supporting John Edwards, yoga practicing, tolerant, and good in bed.

That means I'm a liberal. Despite the fact that I shave, support the death penalty, wear makeup and think for myself.

I will continue to tease you. And I will continue to include my children when I think it's appropriate. And then tease you some more.

I'm here. F*ck you if you don't like it.

You can't afford to lose me, assbag. So handle it.

Or don't.

Completely up to you.

Oh jeez, lighten up people, and I agree with 'wedge,' this is EXACTLY what the right wants us to do. I say live and let live, and try not to vote for idiots who pass laws that seek to divide 'we the people.' I agree that the immigration laws are horrible, counterproductive (unless you are republican) and are apparently serving their purpose.

Well Kate, I'm also pro choice/gay rights/against NAFTA, a vegetarian, a personal trainer, recycler, activist, pro capital punishment, wear make-up, and think for myself..also good in bed. The difference between you and me is I am not a b*tch!

Missy, I've served real life. I know real life. Real life is a friend of mine

Missy, you're no real life.

But you is a biotch. And you don't shave. And there's a strong possibility you're a mullet, b/c no where does kate mention that she was offended on behalf of her children. Why must you make stuff up?

Steve's right. And his presence is part of why I stay on the left. Cause conservatives, who disagree with me on damn near everything, are always so nice. While my fellow liberals can be nasty.

Real Life - Oh, I'm sure you have your moments. We all do. And name calling is so second grade. Grow the f*ck up. Assbag.

You attackers are so brave. Having the nerve to publish your real names and pretty pictures.

I want to be just like you.

First of i really disagree with what you are saying in this article. If there was an immigration speaker there of corse there are going to more "people of hispanic descent" because there are hispanics are the "problem" acording to people these days. Not only do you sound foolish but you sound ineducatied. And for the "bimbo" that woman is very educated and knows more than you know..just beacuse she is a latino person and has big boobs she's a bimbo. Homeboy...you have shown your views for the mexican people through this article..And your kids should not have been there it was an adult dinner and of corse they where going to be disscussing issues...And that old man hes a collage professor..The little mojitos comment was not only racist but un called for and they did show respect your people did not come prepared and we did not write on a blog about the pardy being racist...NOT ONLY ARE YOU VERY RACIST BUT UNEDUCATED

If the loudmouths that night had been Heebs (my tribe) I'd have ranted about Manischewitz wine and back hair. If they'd been Irish Micks (my other tribe) I'd have called them drunks with tiny pee-pee's.

If you think you're above jokes and teasing just because you've been oppressed, you've come to the wrong site.

Homes.

Besides, I'm comfortable with my pro-immigration stances - calling for amnesty for illegal immigrants in such publications as the conservative Tampa Tribune (check out my writings on the side column under my lovely picture). They speak for themselves.

I am *not* "ineducatied", Lori. Besides, Jesus loves me more than I will know.

Woah woah woah.

Let's see now...in Kate's first entry she said "Nothing says family time like discussing underage prostitutes." It was not a family hour...it was an adult meeting. Get a babysitter next time. Then Kate said,"yelling about who's really repressed." Wonder if Kate has a dictionary in that computer because if not she needs one to differentiate between "repressed" and "oppressed." Look the words up, Kate. You will find quite a difference in meaning. Wonder where Kate got her journalism degree...in the mail perhaps??? Let me suggest to you that UCCS and Colorado College have classes in writing that may help you with your grammar, spelling, and perhaps even your word choice! If you profess to be a writer, then learn how to write!!! And if, as you stated, you are a teacher, then perhaps being a positive role model might be constructive. If you are a liberal and an activist, then it would appear the world has turned upside down!!!! Vulgarities make for such cheap humor as do ridicule and personal attacks. If you were attempting satire, then you may want to reread that chapter in your journalism text!

I wasn't there, but I sure enjoyed reading this piece. I took it for what (I think, at least) it was: one woman's hilarious blog about her experience of the meeting. Not a professional reporter's factual account.

Just as I was finishing my laugh, though, I read the comments, and next thing I knew I had the blues. Why can't we disagree without needing to hurt each other? Whose interests are served when we can't laugh at ourselves?

I'll bet the Status Quo feels warm and fuzzy all over knowing we're doing such a great job of scratching each other's eyes out that we might not be able to find our way to the voting booth.

Anyway, thanks for the grins, Ms. Robinson! And save me some garlic bread next time, will you? (Oh, and you can have MY wine -- I don't drink :=)

Thank you for reminding me why I don't belong to the democratic party. Please take a good long minute to think about what it means to respect the dignity of your fellow human beings. Hint: it doesn't involve racist jokes.

That Allison Hunter should send bulk email to democrats over the entire state suggesting this blog entry as a funny read is even more disturbing.

1. Why is it that people think things are funny when the finger is pointed at someone else, but not at themselves? Get a grip. Latinos are human and flawed, just like the rest of us. Besides, if you made asses out of yourselves, then you deserve to be made fun of, I don't care what group you claim to be in.

2. Anyone ever hear of free speech???

3. "Dignity of your fellow human beings?" How about RELAX?

4. If you're going to call someone uneducated (or"ineducatied" as the case may be), you'd better make damn sure you've used spell check and called your English teacher to check your grammar. Otherwise, you look like as giant assbag whose opinion doesn't mean squat.

5. The people on this site who are self-proclaimed Democrats are embarrassing to the party. This is why the Republicans won in 2004, and why they will win in 2008 - Democrats spend more time bitching about stupid crap than coming together and fighting the opponent. Wedge & Steve are the smart ones here.

6. If you don't like what this site has to say, GO AWAY.

Becky, I don't intend to relax and let things pass when it comes to public ridicule of an ethnic group. I don't think you should either.

At 10/23/2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Again, this continues to be entertaining.

What I have learned is that sometimes we have to not take everything in life so seriously and relax.

Read it and move on.

I feel that Kate was writing for entertainment and was laughing at the ridiculousness of some of the events that evening.

Also, "public ridicule of an ethnic group" happens everyday even if you don't like it. Have you ever watched TV?

My, my. Sorry I missed it.

The immigration issue is hot ... and for good reason. As typical, we cause a problem and then blame those affected by the problem we caused. This is so prevalent, there's even a name for it: the "fundamental attribution error."

NAFTA and enormous farm subsidies cause those in Mexico to compete without the subsidies ... forcing them off their farms. They go to cities for jobs where they are lost-cost labor for "offshoring" jobs from the US. Then, thanks to US policies actually subsidizing offshoring, those jobs go to even lower-wage China. Then, in desperation, they flow into the US for jobs. And finally they get blamed for the problem. Beyond annoying, considering this is a life-and-death situation for so many whose lives US policy has destroyed.

Plus, the idea that we wouldn't be able to afford tomatoes if those picking them were paid a decent wage is really offensive. And unarithmetitic, to boot.

In the state of Florida, many tomato pickers have not had a pay raise in over 20 years. They still earn between 40-50 cents for each 32-pound bucket they pick. From Democracy Now, they can pick 4000 lbs/day.

A tomato picker gets $0.50 for picking a 32 lb bucket of tomatoes. Picking 2 tons per day, 4000 lbs/day, pay is $62.50/day or a full-time rate of $12,500/yr.

If, at these wages, tomatoes are $1.89/lb, then paying ten times greater wages would result in the price of tomatoes going to $2.04/lb including paying Social Security). Do the math.

Would shoppers stop buying tomatoes at those increased prices? No. Would you have plenty of people willing to pick tomatoes at a pay rate of $125,000/yr? Yes. The same goes for apples and, I'll bet, any other farm product.

Not paying decent wages is not about "competition" in a mythical 'free market for labor'. It's about greed and manipulation of the "labor market" to assure there are always more people needing jobs than jobs.

Oh, I don't believe in the death penalty because our judicial system allows too many mistakes. However, I'm thinking I should make an exception and see that as an appropriate penalty for George Bush's war crimes (1.2 million civilian dead and 4.2 million refugees) ... then again, hanging is too good for him. How to decide?

I do believe in wine.

To all who received my Dems Club recap,
I am so so sorry that I offended anyone with the forwarding of the link to the blog. I assure you I did not mean anything harmful but unfortunately it was a bad and stupid decision on my part. Especially since I agree with you on most of these issues, and realistically that I believe racial profiling is taking place. I by no means thought the situation was funny...what I thought is that sometimes if we take ourselves too seriously we get lost in the forest and this is when we lose our way and division happens instead of coming together to help eachother. I saw division happening at the Dems Club meeting and this concerned me.

Again, it was a horrible decision on my part to forward the blog and I sincerely apologize. I make no excuses...it was just plain inconsiderate & racially insensitive. I made a thoughtless and irresponsible decision and in doing so and I am afraid now that I have alienated some very good people. Please forgive me. I was absolutely wrong. I hope you can find it in your hearts and minds to know that I am a good and fair person and I am genuinely sorry and I apologize to all. Kate your efforts were good at one time, What happened? Did you get booted from Florida for the same inconsiderate blogs. I wonder sometimes if it's that white privelege thing that makes people like you think it's o.k to put down another's race , because of course you have never been a part of profiling you would never know the severe hurt you and others like you cause for the sake of a laugh, but please dont let me stop you , the more you embarrase yourself the more fuel you put in my fire, see Kate I'm not a bimbo, and had you had enough ganas to come to our table and properly introduce yourself you would know.

Oh dear heavens, where do I start?

Kate -- I thought that I would not find your blog as entertaining once you left Tampa, since I'm not familiar with your new city and state. I was wrong. Very wrong.

"I'm pro-choice/gay rights, against NAFTA and the war in Iraq, biking my environmentally friendly ass to work every day, a recycling vegetarian, Jewish/Buddhist, supporting John Edwards, yoga practicing, tolerant, and good in bed."

You really should have the above sentence as part of your Blogger profile or bio, if it's not already. It's too good not to use elsewhere (hmmm, your professional resume?).

To everyone who has read this blog for only a short time: I'm the polar opposite of Kate (using her description above) in many ways. She has made fun of issues and beliefs that are important to me on numerous occasions. Every once in a while her writing makes me cringe. However, her writing also makes me laugh. And think. And consider a different viewpoint I've never thought about before. And learn. And then laugh again.

I dare you to read Kate's blog for three months. If you do, you'll see that she finds humor everywhere. No one and nothing is off-limits, including her own family, religion, behavior, looks and life choices.

That's why I read her blog every day and am not deeply upset by the few cringe-worthy posts that hit close to home for me personally. She's not mean-spirited or racist; she's intelligent, witty, keenly observant and wickedly funny.

If after reading Kate's blog every day for three months you still feel the same, let me remind you of one of Kate's favorite phrases:

Suck it.

Kate -- To wrap things up, I'll use tips I picked up from "real life" and "i was there" in their comments:

You totally! should use more exclamation points! on your blog!!! Then you'd be a better writer!!! AKA Exclamation points rule!!!!!
