And Now For Something Completely Different
A toking teacher in Tampa.
Sorry, I'm not joining the holier-than-thou crowd to demand his head on a platter.
Cause I've been in high school classrooms. I feel his pain. And there but for the grace of God...
Speaking of the holier-than-thou crowd, my friend Michelle sent this report to me and noted "supposed do-gooders tell themselves they are entitled to special rewards for their piety and virtue (therefore) they make ethical breaches more frequently than the mere 'common sinners.' Reminded me of a certain city we live in, hmmmmmmm........."
For once. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Irony in the "Teacher toked to cope" article: the bottom of each comment posting had the phrase "report abuse".
That teacher teaches at my son's high school. Believe me, you need a joint to be able to cope. He's a senior this year and I can't wait til he graduates.
Kate -- thanks for posting that Marijuana graphic. I gave my younger brother that image (on a poster) about 10 years ago as a Christmas gift. Nice coincidence with the time of year and all that.
As for the teacher: I could go off on a rant about mary jane and the drug war but I'll skip it. Your posts from the past here, about teaching in Tampa, most every one of them (including the Superintendent bent on slave labor ) seems like prime examples of what would lead to teachers needing stress relief.
No students got killed through this, no students ended up having relations with them... The crime is using an illegal drug that Big Pharma hasn't yet copied and marketed to the masses as a stress, and anxiety relief "medication"
Heh, there was a similar incident around these parts a couple of years ago.
While I have a hard time getting worked up about these situations, I suppose there is at least the question of ethics. Teachers do serve as role models and what sort of message is sent when they break the law, even if it is a stupid, ineffectual law.
I think the real question here, though, is how the hell can these teachers afford the Buddha on a teacher's salary? Obviously we're paying them too much!
My bet is he's forgoing a cable bill for a little Mary Jane.
You know what I say - if it's organic, don't panic.
Teachers aren't role models. In the same way that sports stars, priests, and morning news achors aren't role models - generally speaking. We are able to help certain kids apply themselves and perhaps for them we provide a good example.
This guy made a mistake and broke the law. So he should pay some kind of fine. If he's an effective educator, he shouldn't lose his job.
But I bet I'm in the minority on this one.
What else is new?
Remember, an alcoholic goes home and beats his wife, a stoner goes home and forgets to beat his wife ....
Reading this and we wonder why our kids are learning nothing. With teachers like Kate and the toking wonder it speaks volumes.
Whose kids are learning nothing?
My students show incredible gains each semester. They leave my school teary-eyed and pumped up for the first time in their lives about their own education. They've tasted success and won't let it go.
My children are brilliant and learn something new each day.
Perhaps you are the one with the problem. Once more, for those in the cheap seats, if your kids are struggling, often the problems can be traced back to the home.
Dumbass.
If you and your fellow teachers are doing such a good job teaching our kids why are test scores and education skills so crappy. P.S have you shown your fellow teachers and adminstrators that risque photo you posted on your blog yet. I hope your young students didn't throw up if they saw it.

Because it's easier to have children than be a good, involved parent to them. Sorry, you can't pin this one solely on teachers. Sure, some teachers are burned out and some probably have no business being in the field, but the fact is that the biggest problem today facing children trying to get an education is parents: parents that don't take the time on a daily basis to sit down with their children and encourage them to learn both in school and at home; parents that pressure school administrators to pass kids through grades when they really shouldn't because they don't accept the difference between being stupid and needing more time to learn and they don't want to deal with the social stigma of having a child who was kept back, parents who fail to teach their children good work habits and discipline their children so that the time the teachers have with the students is both productive and peaceful, parents that don't support the teachers who are trying to educate their children and who only meet the teacher when there's a problem.
You want to start pointing fingers, Anon, point them at the parents first because that's where the problem starts.
Well said, mcjono.
Anonymous, grow up, you freakshow.
