Why Are Feminists So Not Hot?

I was watching this documentary on VH-1 last night about the sexual revolution. What was I doing while watching it? Cleaning the house.

How's that for irony?

Anyway, the documentary traced the sexual revolution from its beginnings up through the sixties and seventies to where it seemed to die in the eighties.

Good ole Reagan.

They did a long section about pornography and how Ronnie was all obsessed with wiping it out - united for a change with women on the left. I noticed something about the women who were angry about porn. With Gloria Steinem as the lone exception, those women were all heavy and quite unattractive.

What's up with that?

Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with pornography, the women who star in it, the women who watch it, or the men who enjoy it all.

It's easy to think about AIDS, venereal diseases, and unwanted pregnancies and think the sexual revolution failed. But take a minute to consider that just a few years ago, women were second class citizens and now we run corporations, military units, the state department, and damn near the country.

Yes, I want to know a good place in town to buy a bathing suit, but I also want to know my rights regarding sexual harassment. Which wasn't even a well-known term back before the sexual revolution. It was just another day at the office.

I no longer need a man's signature to open a checking account.

I don't agree with the feminist movement, or the sexual revolution's fighters, regarding porn, but we're together on almost everything else. And we have come a long way, baby.

Wow, Kate. With that title and pic, you and Rush Limbaugh are closer than you think.

No, not really.

I'd argue, from a history teacher's point of view, that unattractive women had an easier time fitting into mainstream society before feminism. Since the sexual revolution, it's gotten easier, more affordable, and more accessible to look better. Therefore the focus on looks has never been more important or more ridiculous.

Like anyone else on the planet, I'm sure you could find something that Rush and I agree on - but that ain't it.

And what did you focus on? Their looks.

Yeah, ugly people get all the breaks.

Mentioning an obvious trend isn't focusing on it. I'm just wondering why hot women don't like porn. Maybe that too is a ridiculous question, but...

I can list dozens upon dozens of classically unattractive women (which is subjective I know) who have gone on to do great things throughout history. I've even read articles and studies that show such women were freed from social restrictions because they didn't get married and have children and were therefore able to devote their time to other causes and issues. We are still benefiting from their involvement in the world.

Unattractive men? They too change the world and so many still get hot women. But that's another post for another time.

Those dozens upon dozens of women doing great things throughout history did so by not fitting in with mainstream society, but by bucking the trend. That being said, what constitutes attractiveness has changed quite dramatically throughout history. One must wonder if they were outspoken and activist because they were unattractive, or were they considered unattractive because they didn't behave as prescribed by the norms of the times.

As for unattractive men and their women, females are much more drawn to personality, power, property, or pecuniary prowess than physical appearance. That's something that has changed little since the dawn of time.

Just being a feminist adds extra hot points.

Now I'm confused. In your original post you said:

I noticed something about the women who were angry about porn. [they] were all heavy and quite unattractive.

and in your comment, you said this:

I'm just wondering why hot women don't like porn. Maybe that too is a ridiculous question

Huh?

Both comments are related.

Gloria Steinem was the only one in that program who was both attractive and anti-porn. The rest of the group were angry, humorless, heavy, and not that attractive. They were screaming about Playboy, pornographic movies, how both were equally bad and while I was respectfully disagreeing with them, it occurred to me that whenever this topic came up - the yellers were not that hot. Why? Why does this movement attract unattractive (not hot) women?

That's all I'm asking.
