Florida's Official Health Care Policy for the Poor: Go Jogging

Holly Benson, inept Secretary at Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration, said in a radio interview Wednesday being poor or unemployed is no excuse to be unhealthy.

"It means," Benson said, "you have a lot more time to go running."

The radio host laughed in response.

Oh, those poor fat people. They are just so so funny.

Hear for yourself.

Or feel free to listen to the unedited version, if you can take more than a few minutes of elitist snobs laughing at the unfortunate among us.

Who hired this woman and put her in charge of Florida's health care needs? Charlie Crist, a man who wants to be vice-president, chose a woman who:

1) wears biker gear in her official photo (see above),
2) is in desperate need of what my hair stylist calls a "corrective color situation,"
3) thinks poor people can solve health care woes like heart disease and diabetes with a quick run around the block. After all, they have nothing better to do.

Choice move, Crist. Nurse Ratched wasn't available?

So what have we learned from thsi kids?

You could have cancer, or you could have lost an apendage through an accident, or have become crippled in some way or another but it matters not! By the powers that be -- NikeĀ© and the Ghost of Steve Prefontaine -- all ills will be taken care of if you go JOGGING!

Yes! Go forth and JOG and you will be able to control HIV! Jog and the pneumonia will be nullified! Asthmatic? Have a neurological disorder? Heart condition? Immune system deficiency? Maybe you're just old and your body is breaking down...

IT MATTERS NOT! JOG, BABY! JOG!!!

Now excuse me because all of this snarky sarcasm can't stop me from feeling sick aobut the ignorance displayed by Holly Benson.

Hey, hey, let's not us get down on Jogging, why I've found that by jogging I remain poor and unhealthy, and I'm far from the house, hey, who started this jogging thing anyway, and there no Fixx?

Wait a minute, doesn't this exhibit a sort of policy change for you? I remember a post of yours awhile back where you showed a certain lack of sympathy for the overweight and I tried to point out that, with food prices being what they are and rising, it was a lot harder (and, in many cases, impossible) to eat healthy if one was living below the poverty line or even above.

So now Holly Benson says unemployment is no excuse for not taking care of yourself and she gets called an elitist snob?

QJ - I don't mind a frank discussion of what the poor and unemployed can do to take care of themselves. I was poor growing up and my mother made sure we had balanced meals and stayed healthy. However, to laugh and suggest the poor have plenty of time to go running is a bit glib even for my taste. I'm not surprised Holly Benson thinks this way, just annoyed and appalled that she felt free to say so on a radio program. It shows an nauseating lack of decency and sensitivity.

She oughta get canned.
