I Get the Best Emails - Ongoing

This one is partly true, check out Snopes.

And then proceed with caution.

Wanted to give everyone a heads up that if you tend to give gift cards around the holidays, you need to make sure the cards will be honored after the holidays. Stores that are planning to close after Christmas are still selling the cards. There is no law preventing them from doing this.

Below is a partial list of stores that you need to be cautious about.

Circuit City
Ann Taylor
Nationwide
Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug ,and Catherine's
Eddie Bauer
Cache
Talbots
J. Jill
Pacific Sunwear
GAP

Levitz

Piercing Pagoda
Disney
Home Depot
Macys
Linens and Things
Movie Galley
Pep Boys
Sprint/Nextel
JC Penney
Ethan Allen

Jump back a sec. Are you telling me that Macey's, Dillard's...DISNEY...Gap and Eddie Bauer are all going out of business after the holidays?

Even in a protracted economic downturn, that seems unlikely...

Not necessarily going out of business, but even if a few of the stores close and there aren't any nearby, using the cards could prove to be a hassle.

Closing locations is one thing, "Going out of business" is another.

I know Circuit City is in financial trouble, and of course other stores are cutting back as well.

But by the logic of "Gotta be careful because they are closing", Starbucks should be on this list. Anything linked to General Motors should be on this list as well.

So I think while it's dubiously true, it's also not going to help the economy by inciting a panic (through this chain email) that you shouldn't shop these stores (or get gift cards to redeem at these stores) this holiday season because they are closing.

Like the snopes link said, some of these companies are filing for bankruptcy (like Circuit City). That doesn't mean that they are going out of business.

Just so y'all know: I'm now issuing gift cards. I don't actually sell anything, but I'll honor the card.

Hi - I work at The Home Depot . . . The list references old information, at least for us. We announced the closing of 15 stores back in May and have no plans to close additional stores.

In addition, our gift cards have no fees, do not expire and can be used at ANY Home Depot store.

We've posted an official note on our "Fact Check" page which you can see here: http://corporate.homedepot.com/wps/portal/Fact_Check

Hope this helps clarify a bit!
