What Do You Think?

Every year at Chanukah, my family devotes a theme to each night. Sometimes we give gifts that follow that theme - like Book Night or Education Night. Other evenings are named Fun or Freebie where the focus is on good times and the only requirement is that the gifts aren't dangerous or fattening.

On Homemade Night we make the gifts ourselves.

Yet another is Charity Night. We pick a worthy cause and give some of our money. The boys even dig into their piggy banks and we talk about the organization and why it's important after lighting the menorah.

In years past, we've chosen the ACLU, St. Jude's Hospital, Afghan Children's Fund, the Humane Society, the Red Cross and many more.

Who should we give to this year? (First one that says the Republican Party gets a long, wet kiss and then a smack across the face.)

Seriously, there are many worthy causes and I'm open to suggestions. Nothing is jumping out at me, so feel free to point me in the right...err...correct direction.

And Equality Florida wants your opinion, too.

Fill out this survey and tell them where to focus their efforts.

Equality Florida, huh? That's a worthy cause...

The Republican...

I only said half, so I only get half the reward. You pick.

If I may say something, while Equality Florida is serves a purpose, in these lean times, there are many more pressing needs. You might try donating to your local area hospital that sees the most emergency room cases. Given the economy, any charity dealing with underserved families or food pantries would welcome your donation. Depending on how much you donate, you might try contacting local organizations helping with families facing foreclosure on their homes and seeing if they have some sort of way to pay the mortgage for a family, at least for a month.

Equality in on the agenda, certainly, but having food on the plates of hungry families or helping a family stay in their home, even if it's just for another month, has to take precedence. Triage is cruel, but necessary.

What a great (and fun) holiday tradition for you and your family. Your kids will thank you for this (and be better people).

And I disagree with the Quaker (at my own risk). There are always hungry and needy people. There are also many other worthy charities that need your money too. Or you could send the money to the Quaker and he can (re)distribute it.

Yes, give the Quaker your cash. I promise to put it to good use!
