Where Everybody Knows My Name

I'm looking for a place to become a regular.

What are the requirements?

I'd like a locally owned establishment in North Tampa with friendly faces where I can sip a glass of wine and relax with a good book. Maybe some enlightened conversation.

I'm not asking for much.

Not interested in the kind of place where Jody Foster got raped in The Accused. So Denning's Lounge on Florida Avenue is out.

Maybe Villaggio Ristorante? Yummy food. Except their bar only serves wine and beer. What about the days when a cosmopolitan calls my name?

The Red Elephant has a full-service bar, but it's way trendy. What about the days when I'm in jeans and a t-shirt? Plus I don't think it's locally owned.

Maybe Skipper's Smokehouse is more my speed. Relaxing, good music most of the time, and comfortable.

I don't know, but I'm open to suggestions.

Too bad they closed Volley Club.

Well, I can't help you in the Florida area, but I think becoming a regular somewhere is a grand idea. I have a place here where people not only know my name, but my drink (Bombay Sapphire martini, very dry, very dirty, three olives, up, God help you if I find a twist in there by mistake). Boozefish. Google it. Wonderful place. Plus, like all bars now, they're utterly smoke free.

It just feels right to have a haunt, you know? At least a haunt that's classy. I hope you find one soon!

Skippers is a good place. They host a fundraiser every year for the domestic violence centers in the area, including Pasco.

If you go to Skippers, be sure to request Chris as your bartender and tell him you are a friend of mine...he's my cousin...he'll fix you a decent drink I'm sure!

Drink a lot there. And tip well. And go somewhere with a cute bartender (if you're getting drunk, you might as well have some eye candy serving you).

Skippers ... support local music.

But, like, you're going to take public transportation, right? A few drinks puts you over the limit ... and, well, that's about 10 grand ... if you don't hurt anyone ... trust me.

Been there. Riding the bus now. Or drinking diet Pepsi.

Which sucks. :-)
